Tell Us About Your Business / Organization

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor, and I’ve been committed to helping people improve their mental health for more than 25 years. Over the years, I worked in a variety of settings with many different people, and I’ve discovered that relationships are my absolute favorite focus in my work. I love helping people gain self-awareness and improve their self-love and care, which leads to healthier relationships. I help people achieve these goals through individual and couples therapy, training and speaking engagements, and, most recently, my book, Adventures in Love.

Honestly, I can’t say specifically why I am so different from my colleagues, other than you get me when I show up for work. I am a therapist to my core, but most importantly, I embrace that I am a human with struggles just like everyone else. I am not too proud to be transparent that I sometimes struggle too. I always tell my clients the same strategies we practice in sessions and in training, I use in my life. I’m grateful that I can share a part of me with the people I work with, and I can, without a doubt, tell them I’m working the same way they are, with the same strategies. I’m no Wonder Woman, and I have no desire to do it on my own!

What is your story

Years ago, as a young girl, I was getting into trouble for minding other people’s business. I was the one speaking up for others and telling people what to do. For many years, many people, including myself, thought I would help people by becoming a lawyer. At some point, I realized that a lot of people in my community were hurting and hurting themselves and their families. I didn’t understand why they wouldn’t get the help they needed. Back then, I didn’t know anything about mental health.

Years later, I began my career, and my passion and curiosity about mental health intensified. I earned my graduate degree and eventually began working exclusively in mental health. However, it wasn’t until I began my own business that I felt like I was completely walking in my purpose. In my private practice, I have the privilege of providing services and strategies that have been tailored to my clients’ needs. My therapeutic services, training, speaking engagements, and book are just the beginning of the products and services I have created for my clients and others who need help navigating life. There is still so much to do, but I’m ready, and I’m diligently working. Can’t wait to share what’s next!

Accomplishments/Accolades/Awards

One of my most recent proudest moments is writing and publishing my first book, Adventures in Love. I continue to be proud that every day, I have the privilege of walking in my purpose. My passion is my work and building my female, black-owned business. I remain excited about building my business that is focused solely on helping people heal, improve their relationships, and enjoy their lives.

What Does Being “Dauntless” Mean to You?

It means never giving up despite what the circumstances look like or what people say. It’s almost like being invincible. No matter my doubts or fears, I find a way to move forward. I remind myself of my passion and the calling on my life and take the next step. The next step might be an inch forward or a huge leap. It doesn’t matter because it’s progress. Progression is winning!

Inspiration Focus: Personal definition of courage and authenticity. Courage is doing it scared and doing it regardless! Authenticity is not changing who I am because of people, places, or circumstances. You get the same Darsha in a professional setting as in a social setting. Am I a little quieter in the library than at the football game? Yes, of course, but the essence of Darsha remains the same. I only know how to be me, and that’s what you get, ME. And I’ve been called to be Me!

If You Could Change One Thing About the World, What Would It Be?

If you had the power to change one thing about the world, what would it be and why? I want people to heal from hurt. When people heal, they can treat themselves and others better. Hurt people, hurt people.

Personal Life

My relationship with God means more to me than anything else in this whole world. I enjoy spending time with loved ones…doing whatever. It’s about the company. Feeling the sun on my skin and listening to music are my favorite ways to enjoy passing the time.

Principles to Live By

Any struggles along the way? If yes, please tell us how you overcame them. If no, please tell us why you think there wasn’t any.

Of course, there have been struggles along the way, and there continue to be struggles. Being a black woman in this world and battling what the world says about black women and how we are often mistreated is real and can be so disheartening. One of my biggest struggles is taking on the responsibility of proving the world wrong. It’s a lofty goal, and it does become heavy, but I remind myself that there were black women before me who made it easier for me because of their struggles. I remind myself of my why and the extreme value of my work. I’m helping people change their lives, and that is worth every internal and external struggle I face.
