The CARE Project, Inc. is my 501c3 nonprofit created in 2013 and officially became recognized by the IRS as tax exempt in 2014.
Mission: To care and reduce financial and emotional burdens of those diagnosed with breast cancer.
Motto: Never Stop Caring
What sets TCP apart from other breast cancer nonprofits is we are founded by, led by, and run by breast cancer survivors who have varied experiences from diagnosis well into survivorship. We also include males diagnosed as they are often overlooked, dismissed and excluded from resources, studies, and support based on their gender.
We also have a Certified CareDoula, also referred to as a Death Doula oncall 24/7 to support terminally-ill clients who are preparing and managing the end of life journey.
The CARE Project, Inc. (TCP) was created out of my own lived experience. I was diagnosed with Stage III breast cancer in 2012 after just turning 41 years old. I was a divorced mom of three living paycheck to paycheck and cancer certainly wasn’t in my budget. Even with good medical insurance, there are added expenses such as countless copays, supplies, and everyday expenses that become luxuries when not working full time while in treatment. It was only 1 year into my own diagnosis that I realized there was a gap in resources for both women AND men diagnosed with breast cancer. You could find a support group or prosthesis at various nonprofits, but not impactful financial support for everyday living expenses and medical expenses while in the thick of treatment. I often met other patients who were foregoing a chemotherapy or radiation treatment because they had to choose between a $100 copay for treatment or $100 worth of groceries. I didn’t create TCP to replace or duplicate what other nonprofits were already doing, but to fill in the gaps. We would be survivor found, led and run and I would not take a salary to do so.
Over the course of 8 years, I realized I was most helpful to the terminally-ill, end stage patients than I was with the newly diagnosed. I decided to get formal training and become certified as a CareDoula through the School of Accompanying the Dying. This title is also referred to as a Death Doula. I am the on-call Death Doula for The CARE Project, Inc., and for hire outside of that through my small business, Care and Beyond Consulting, LLC.
Formal training is crucial in most instances of supporting those with a cancer diagnosis, but having lived through it is even more valuable. I believe this is what sets me and my businesses apart from others.

Being “dauntless” means having the grit, determination, and courage to keep moving forward, even when life throws you curveballs, challenges and tragedies. In my everyday life, from taking care of my mom with late-stage Alzheimer’s to working as a Death Doula with terminally-ill patients, I forge forward despite frustration, fear, and hardships.
If I had the power to change things globally, what would it be? First and foremost, racism and violence. I’m a 55 year old woman with a multiethnic background. I married a black man 30 years ago and have black children who have been bullied, harrassed, discriminated against, and so much more. I have experienced the ugliest sides of racism for marrying that man and being a mom to kids who look nothing like me. It is the scariest thing in my world – worrying about my kids and how the world treats them. If I could only change one thing, that would be it. Treat humans, all humans, with kindness, compassion, and grace.
My “happy place” is floating in my pool. It is where my best “big, bright ideas” come to life. I can disengage from all responsibilities and just relax and recharge.
While becoming a mother at 18 is not something I recommend, I am thankful to be a grandmother of 3 at this time in my life. (Currently 55 years old)
Along with water, MUSIC is my therapy. Old school, jazz, blues, and live music give me life!

Swimming, walking, pilates & live music! Wine tasting is also a guilty pleasure at least once per year.
